Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Review

Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Review

UE’s Boom 2 was a huge success. The expectations of the successor Boom 3 are correspondingly high. Will it live up to them, or will it fall by the wayside in the face of numerous competitors?

The Ultimate Ears Boom 3 is a great companion, especially for music fans looking for a particularly suitable box for use in the open air. The new generation convinces with a strong sound level, great quality, and practical features. Other models are only partially stronger in the bass range, but this plays a subordinate role, especially outdoors.

Ultimate Ears, UE for short, is an integral part of the world of Bluetooth speakers. Especially the bestseller Boom is one of the most popular models on the market. After the UE Boom 2, the Logitech subcontractor builds on the successor. So, can Boom 3 also prove itself in the test?

We took a closer look at the simple speaker tube. Then, we’ll show you what the UE Boom 3 is good at, what weaknesses it has, and whether the new generation can still surpass its popular predecessor.

  • Robust, attractive design
  • Good working app
  • Strong volume level

  • No USB-C
  • Slightly weak bass

UE Boom 3: Cylindrical, Practical, Good

Some manufacturers rely on extravagant shapes and designs. Ultimate Ears has always inspired the Boom with a colorful but simple look. The newest member of the Boom family is no exception. The cylindrical design ensures a 360° sound and is easy to stow away.

In our test, we were able to try the forest green version. The fine fabric of the surface is streaked with golden fibers. This has a nice effect. Two oversized volume controls characterize the front of Boom 3. In addition, the Boom 3 has a small loop useful when transporting or hanging on the back.

It doesn’t hurt if you have a snap hook with you. The UE Boom 3 is quickly attached to the backpack or hung up somewhere. To continue, the three buttons on the top control Ultimate Ears Boom 3 are:

  • The power button on the front.
  • The large function button is in the middle.
  • The rear button for pairing with new devices.

You start and pause the music with a single press of the function button, and with a double press, you jump to the next track.

Hearing test UE Boom 3: great sound, but the big “boom” is missing

Once you call up the full 90 decibels maximum volume, it becomes clear that with the Boom 3, you have a real powerhouse in your hands. The Boom 3 produces a lot of pressure with its two two-inch drivers and the passive bass radiators!

The mids, in particular, are clear and powerful, and the highs also create a clean and differentiated sound. This is particularly useful for speech reproduction. Podcasts and audiobooks sounded clear and easy to understand on the Boom 3 in the test. Only in the bass range do you miss the last bit of “boom” with the Boom 3. With its round design, the Boom 3 resonates evenly in all directions.

The low end of the frequency response is around 90 Hz for Boom 3. Other comparable size and price models are further down at 60 to 70 Hz, at least on paper. So, although nobody expects an abysmal thunderstorm of bass from a loudspeaker of this size, the Boom 3 would still do well to have a bit more “boom” underneath.

Made for outdoor use – externally and acoustically

We listened to The Weekend’s successful and cleanly produced track Blinding Lights as a listening test. The excellently mixed vintage synthesizers hum and sound loud and clear from the cylindrical loudspeaker. The high frequencies from the snare and hi-hat also give the Boom 3 a nice rhythmic and clear sound. On the back of the Boom 3, a rubber tab protects the USB port for charging the box.

However, the depths of the crisp Moog bass and the dynamic kick drum don’t quite come into their own. The Boom 3 sounds quite balanced, but the JBL Flip 5, comparable in price and size, pushes a little more powerfully in the bass range.

All of this does not detract from Boom 3 overall. On the contrary, it feels particularly at home outdoors and is particularly impressive when the volume is required. Thanks to the 360-degree arrangement of the loudspeakers, the same sound is heard everywhere, and you are well equipped with the Boom 3 in every terrain and for every occasion.

Extras of the Ultimate Ears Boom 3 – A robust companion

The predecessor Boom 2 has already proven extremely durable in everyday outdoor use. The Boom 3 continues this seamlessly regarding stability, dust, and water protection.

With an IP67 rating, you don’t have to worry about dust or water. The Boom 3 should survive up to 30 minutes in one-meter deep water without any problems.

But you can listen to music better above the water, and the battery can do a lot there: the UE Boom 3 provides you with music for up to 15 hours at a moderate volume. In addition, the separately available charging station Power Up is a practical accessory for the Boom 3.

Accessories, apps, and other

The Power Up charging station is a special extra for the Boom 3. The small docking station is sold separately and charges the box on the shelf or table. Purchasing the Power Up can make sense, especially for owners of several Ultimate Ears loudspeakers, because it is also compatible with the Megaboom 3, Blast, and Megablast models. The contact point for the Power Up charging station is located on the underside of Boom 3.

An absolute must for Boom 3 owners is the Ultimate Ears app for Android and iOS. Here you have full control over the sound with the equalizer. You can also select a favorite playlist from Apple Music, Deezer, or Amazon Music in the app, which you can then play immediately by long-pressing the function button on the Ultimate Ears Boom 3.

You also have access to the PartyUp feature here. As a result, up to an unbelievable 150 different UE models can be connected.

Particularly noteworthy: Older and newer generations within the product family are compatible. This way, you can all pair the Boom, Boom 2, Boom 3, Megaboom, and Megaboom 3 models with each other. Here UE is fooling many other manufacturers.

However, you have to do without voice control or a power bank function with the Boom 3. With Boom 3, UE focuses on the essentials; sound and performance.

Our test result for the UE Boom 3

The new Boom 3 from the successful series is convincing in the test and also lives up to the heritage of its popular predecessor. Processing and design speak for quality and longevity. Wind, weather, or even a fall cannot harm the Boom 3, making it the perfect companion for active outdoor fans.

The Boom 3 can also build on the virtues of its predecessor in terms of sound. A clear, distinct, and particularly loud sound emanates from the cylinder, with which you are prepared for many occasions. Only in the bass range could UE’s new protégé use a little more Power. However, this applies primarily to use in the home and is less noticeable outdoors. The Boom 3 from Ultimate Ears is just the thing for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a box with stamina, robust quality, and powerful volume.
