Sennheiser RS 195 Review

Sennheiser RS 195 Review

Wireless headphones provide significantly more mobile, carefree listening pleasure.
Sennheiser uses a new digital transmission technology for the RS series. It promises interference-free music transmission at home with a long-range. Here is the Sennheiser RS 195 for groovy bass sounds.

At the beginning of 2015, Sennheiser presented its new line of RS headphones at the CES in Las Vegas. When it comes to headphones, it is predominantly wireless models that are becoming increasingly popular. They provide a much more mobile, carefree listening experience than wired ones. For a long time, the wireless transmission was associated with the drawback of a limitation in audio quality. A negative influence can almost be ruled out using radio technology.

PROS:

  • Wireless headphones that are comfortable to wear and deliver high-quality audio.
  • There are several distinct customizable listening modes that emphasize different frequency bands.
  • Panning can be adjusted to make one ear louder than the other.

CONS:

  • Expensive.
  • Bulky design not for everyone.

Four new digital headphones

The RS series, which has been introduced for some time, is intended for wireless use at home. A combined base/charging station transmits the audio signal via radio simultaneously to several connected headphones. At the same time, the base station also serves as a shelf.
Sennheiser is introducing four new digital headphones with a new transmission technology. The RS 165 stands for powerful bass reproduction. The RS 175 offers two virtual surround sound modes and has a switchable bass boost. With Sennheiser RS 195, the sound can be adapted to the preferences of the user. Sennheiser promises to set new wireless home audio segment standards with the new RS digital wireless headphones. Green enough for us to subject the RS 195, which appeared a few weeks ago, to an extensive practical test and to review it,

Sennheiser RS 195 can be adapted to individual listening preferences.

The Sennheiser RS 195 are circumaural digital wireless headphones with a long-range of up to 100 meters from the transmitter. This means that you can move around the entire house without any problems, without interrupting the transmission or the sound quality suffering.

With the RS 195, Sennheiser is expanding its wireless range to include headphones that can be primarily adapted to the preferences of the user and their hearing characteristics. For example, the user can increase speech intelligibility or optimize the sound so that the TV program or the current selection of music can be played back crystal clear.

Scope of Delivery

In addition to the Sennheiser RS 195 headphones, the scope of delivery includes a transmitter, the power supply unit including a country adapter, and two NiMH batteries. The packaging looks exceptionally high-quality.

Radio transmission in the 2.4 GHz band

Sennheiser’s new digital wireless transmission technology, which transmits on the 2.4 GHz band, ensures that the headphones are particularly reliable compared to other wireless models: All RS models are characterized by low and high latency Range. The RS 165 offers a range of up to 30 meters, while the RS 175, RS 185, and RS 195 models are supposed to guarantee good reception up to 100 meters from the transmitter station. In our test, we did not reach the range limits with the HDR195 over-ear headphones from the RS 195, even inside buildings over two floors with a thick concrete ceiling. The home environment is increasingly confronted with many radio technologies. The audio specialist from Wedemark fully compensated for these potential interferers from microwave ovens to wifi and the like by using digital radio transmission technology. To still achieve outstanding sound results, Sennheiser uses the latest digital wireless transmission technology with efficient bandwidth management. The headphones then function optimally and without restrictions even when other wireless devices are used simultaneously.

Installation

Sennheiser promises all headphones in the RS line a plug-and-play experience. The setup and installation are done quickly. The enclosed instructions are also easy to understand and enable quick commissioning without technical jargon. It is exemplary that Sennheiser is moving on to this. The instructions are also available online on the Internet.

First of all, the two 1.2 volt NiMH rechargeable batteries (size AAA) must be inserted into the headphones for use. The battery compartment in each ear can be accessed by turning the cover slightly. The first charge of the AAA batteries should take 16 hours. All other charging processes will then take approximately 8 hours. The RS 195 is easy and intuitive to use and offers continuous listening pleasure for up to 18 hours. The transmitter station included in the scope of delivery is not only used for individual adjustment of the sound characteristics, but it also functions as a charging station so that the headphone’s battery is automatically charged as soon as it is placed on the transmitter station. The red LED on the front of the docking station only lights up when the headphones are plugged in and charged.

On the back of the base station is the input for the power supply of the external power supply unit, an optical Toslink digital input, and analog audio input with a 3.5 mm jack. Most modern audio devices, as well as televisions, have a corresponding optical Toslink output. This means that the audio signal is sent directly to the base station digitally and without loss. Switch on the headphones and base station, and you’re ready to go.

The LEDs on the headphones and the transmitter indicate the current operating status. If the headphones are not used, the LED brightness is automatically reduced after approx. 30 seconds.

Sound optimization via individual adjustment – 6×3 settings

Due to the individual adjustment, the user has setting options available that promise a significantly better sound quality overall. With the help of manual level adjustment, the RS 195 can generate a perfectly tailored, unadulterated sound. There are modes for speech and music with seven different playback options with different sound characteristics. These should each have different compression, different accentuation, or amplification in the high, mid, and bass ranges so that individual hearing impairments can be compensated for in a targeted manner. Furthermore, selectable boost presets and additional noise suppression ensure clearer dialogues and excellent speech intelligibility. Another special feature of the Sennheiser RS 195 is noise suppression specially designed for TV. In addition, the user can adjust the balance between the left and right channels individually according to his needs. The centerpiece is the mode button, which can be used to make the desired sound adjustments. The choices are 1. Hearing profile, 2. Language, 3. Music. It is switched on and off by holding down the mode button for a little longer than two seconds. Operation is, therefore, largely intuitive.

The Sennheiser RS 195 are closed, circumaural, wireless headphones characterized by an extremely detailed and uncompressed sound and thus ensure a real sound experience even without cables. Sennheiser developed these headphones in close collaboration with the Frauenhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT, whereby the focus was, of course, on the special needs of people with impaired hearing. Such people are particularly sensitive to high volume levels; During the development of the new Sennheiser RS 195, the volume was corrected so that the user can perceive sound optimizations at precisely these high volumes. This is a signal processing strategy developed by Fraunhofer IDMT, originally designed for hearing aid technology and has now been further developed for use in entertainment electronics. This also means that speech and music are treated differently on the Sennheiser RS 195, and the volume is automatically and specifically corrected. Furthermore, in addition to adapting the sound, the headphones automatically optimize the volume for TV programs with strong volume fluctuations. Therefore, manual readjustment is no longer necessary and makes the otherwise constant manual volume adjustment, depending on the program content, largely obsolete.

With the Sennheiser RS 195, the first time can specifically compensate for hearing loss through personalized sound adjustment. This solution is particularly suitable for people with impaired hearing. It is also recommended for those particularly discerning audiophile customer groups who want a particularly extensive adjustment of the sound characteristics to their taste. We were surprised by the level of detail. With the RS 195, the listener can discover the finest nuances and details in the music he is listening to.

Over-ear comfort even over a longer period

The ergonomically shaped headphones with a circumaural design are light and comfortable to wear and allow excellent wearing comfort even when used for long periods. The RS 195 is recommended for domestic music as well as TV and film enjoyment. Remote control is located in the right auricle for volume, mode (sound profile), on / off.

The choice of materials and quality are of the high standard that Sennheiser is used to. The structural elements of the articulated joints, bow extensions, padding, and the extremely low weight allow hours of fatigue-free and trouble-free wearing comfort. The test listeners could not notice any pressure points on the skin even after long periods of use. The temples react very flexibly and adapt to the shape of the head. The unwanted warming of the ears is also limited. Nevertheless, the shielding is excellent.

The ear cups are covered with ultra-thin, super-soft synthetic leather. The manufacturers of high-quality headphones are increasingly using synthetic leather in the upper and top classes. That doesn’t have to be a disadvantage. However, it would be welcome if Sennheiser would enclose a set of alternative upholstery.

The RS line was developed in Germany – but the headphone line is now being assembled in China. Nevertheless, the quality and choice of materials are still very high quality and are expected in this price range. The RS line has been on the market since the end of January 2015. Sennheiser states the recommended retail price (RRP) at 399 euros. But the buyer receives a lot of money for wireless home headphones that are still largely unique on the market.

Conclusion: wireless with personalized sound adjustment – but without compromises

With Sennheiser RS 195, Sennheiser has developed wireless headphones to compensate for age-related hearing loss through personalized sound adjustment. The ability to adapt to individual preferences also benefits sound lovers without hearing impairments. We can attest the RS 195 has a particularly good and balanced sound. The RS 195 scores with excellent sound – without any cables. The sound experience is rounded off by an appealing design and first-class wearing comfort. The entire expertise and experience of the sound experts from Wedemark near Hanover come into play in both central properties. The RS 195 scores with an excellent stereo sound, good quality, and sufficient range, as well as a sufficient battery life of up to 18 hours. If you do not want to be disturbed by ambient noise while watching TV and want to enjoy excellent sound quality, you can access this without hesitation.
