Polk Audio Atrium 8 Review
Polk is a respected name in the audio business, and its products are known for their excellent quality. This review would be about Polk Audio Atrium 8 SDI outdoor speaker, which is the flagship of this particular line, and by that meaning, it is the biggest and the most expensive in the range.
- Durable and weatherproof design
- Functions alone as a single stereo speaker or can be combined with another speaker and form a stereo pair
- Installation is easy
- Excellent sound
- The speaker is large and heavy
The speaker’s dimensions are 32.7 cm in height, 21.59 cm in width, and 23.34 cm in depth. The weight of the speaker is 9.7 lbs and comes in white and black color.
Inside the box, you have the speaker, the mounting bracket, the manual, and an online product registration card.
You might be surprised by the heavyweight speaker, but there will be no problems with the installation, as the mounting bracket makes it more accessible. Polk Audio Atrium 8 is a compact but still a prominent speaker. The cabinet consists of durable, mineral-filled polypropylene with molded-in bracing.
The grille, the same way as the bracket, is aluminum made, while the hardware is stainless steel and brass. Under the grille, there are two 1-inch aluminum dome tweeters and one 6.5 inches woofer that handle up to 125 watts per channel. The tweeter placement is designed for better stereo separation in single-speaker setups. The frequency response is 45 Hz to 27 kHz, and the sensitivity is 91 dB. Impedance is 8 ohms stereo (dual input) or 4 ohms mono (single input).
The 5-way binding posts of the speaker are gold-plated, and the speaker has a 180-degrees speed lock mounting system. The speaker has a unique single/dual input switch for switching from an individual stereo speaker to a left and right stereo pair. This way, you get indoor sound, even outdoors. That is what the SDI in the name stands for. It refers to the single/dual input switch that allows the Polk Audio Atrium 8 to be used as a high-performance stereo speaker. When you flip the switch, two of these speakers can be paired together as separate left and right speakers. One of these speakers is loud enough unless you have a vast area that you want to cover. Then you need two speakers.
For minimizing distortion and turbulence, and better sound and bass at the same time, there is a power port for venting. This port is water-resistant so that the sound won’t be affected even in the pouring rain. The music is clear, and both tune and lyrics are understandable.
It doesn’t make a difference if you choose to mount the speaker horizontally or vertically. The setup is effortless. You need two screws to mount the simple bracket and then big screws to attach the speaker to the same stand.
The all-weather certification assures you that the Atrium 8 will endure extreme conditions, such as high temperatures, rain, or snow. Of course, you can also protect the speaker from making it last longer, but it is prepared to be outside.
The good thing about the Atrium 8 is that there are both left and right channels on the same speaker, so you get surround sound for a reasonable price.
Polk Audio Atrium 8 has enough mid and low range, so a subwoofer is not necessary. The sound is not hollow like the one produced by cheap outdoor speakers. The two 1-inch tweeters and the 6.5-inch woofer provide a crisp sound without any distortion even at high volume levels. Once you hear the Atrium 8, you will think that it is a proper speaker and not an outdoor version.
As mentioned before, the sound is clear and distortion-free, but if you prefer to have a booming bass, then you should consider a subwoofer for that deep bass sound. So subwoofer can enhance the sound, but it is not essential to have.
The Polk Audio Atrium 8 is an outdoor speaker designed for people who love their music inside the home and outside. So if you have ample outdoor space and you still want the sound quality to be on a high level, this is a speaker for you. If you are looking for a high-quality speaker that is worth the money you pay and at the same time comes from a recognizable brand and is equipped with plenty of features, then you can’t go wrong with Polk Atrium 8. The only problem is that once you hear this speaker’s performance, you would probably want to buy another as well.
