Klipsch R-14M Review
Klipsch is an American company, a brand name carved in the audio industry for more than 70 years (since 1949), bringing joy to many generations. The company is known for bringing fantastic sound into your living room at a reasonable price while still breathing out luxury and power.
So if you are looking for a speaker that looks great and still has a clear and spacious sound without taking too much space in your room, Klipsch R-14M might be the right choice for you.
- Impressive look
- Good, affordable price
- Full bass
- Small speaker drivers
- Fewer details at low volumes
- A subwoofer is essential for a complete experience
If there is something that a company in the audio business with over seven decades of experience can do, then it is the design and the appearance of the speakers. The size of Klipsch R-14M is 10 inches tall and 6 inches wide, with quite a depth of 7.5 inches that is essential for the sound’s quality. The weight is 14.1 pounds.
The cabinet has a stylish, elegant look thanks to the brushed black polymer veneer, which also has some wood grain touch. Black is the only color of choice. By being small enough and elegant, the speakers can fit in any living room, perfectly blending with the rest of the furniture around them.
The grille is entirely black with rose gold Klispsch’s logo that makes a beautiful contrast from the whole black unit. Although the grille has its function for dust and bumps protection, you get to see how pretty the speaker is by removing it. There are no bolts and screws, so putting them on or removing them is easy with magnets.
The woofer cone made of metallic copper pops out with its color and demands attention and admiration.
The build quality is premium. The cabinets consist of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), a material made of wood fibers with resin to seal it together. This material is excellent for enduring everyday use but still flexible with the sound.
Klipsch R-14M has a 1-inch aluminum LTS tweeter combined with a 90 x 90 Tractrix Horn, an improved version of the exponential horn, for better performance in reproducing low-frequency sounds and providing broad coverage of high frequencies. The Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) tweeter has the function to minimize the distortion of the sound, so even when the volume is at high levels, the music sounds excellent.
The 4-inch IMG woofer (Injection Molded Graphite Woofer) provides amazing low-frequency that pairs so well with the LTS tweeter, resulting in a very efficient speaker.
The Rear-firing port is on the back of the cabinet and minimizes turbulence at very low frequencies, together with five-way binding posts.
Sound quality of Klipsch r-14m
The Klipsch R-14M provides full and powerful sound. Each speaker locks in at about 50 watts of continuous handling, while the peak is 200 watts, which is quite loud if you take in mind that these speakers have only 4-inch woofers.
If you hook them into a home theater system, they work well with a subwoofer for a great movie night or just listening to music. The combination with a subwoofer is for better coverage of the frequencies. The R-14M put sound between 64 Hz and 24 kHz, and the subwoofer covers the frequency from 10 Hz to 63 Hz.
It is interesting that when listening to dialogues or music with lots of details on speakers set on low volumes, some details get lost. Once the volume is up, the speaking voices become more evident.
Klipsch R-14M make an excellent choice for a side, front, or surround speaker for a home theater setup. The speakers work with a standard A/V connection, but the sound will be much better if an amplifier connects.
Because there are only primary ports and no USB and Bluetooth, the connectivity is somewhat limited.
Klipsch R-14M are passive speakers, and they can’t cover the frequency response at the low end of the spectrum, so a receiver is required. The experience is complete when paired with a subwoofer. If you prefer a louder model with more details at a lower volume, you should consider R-15M.
But overall, if you need passive bookshelf speakers from a well-known manufacturer, Klipsch R-14M is a perfect choice. You get a complete audio response, higher than you would expect from a four-inch driver, especially when the volume is higher. Klipsch R-14Ms are among the cheapest bookshelf speakers and a bargain shop for people starting their audio journey.
