BIC America F12 Subwoofer Review
BIC (British Industries Corporation) started as an American company importing British audio products in the 1950s.
In 1973, they started making their American loudspeakers, with Venturi Port, a specialized port allowing the speakers to produce a cleaner sound.
The company was top-rated in the 70s and then raised again in the late 80s by introducing different audio products, as speakers and subwoofers.
BIC America F12 Subwoofer is one of the most popular items created by this company.
- Beautiful design without the grille
- Powerful bass
- Clean sound at higher volumes
- Unique details at lower volumes
- Some might consider it too heavy and big
BIC America F12 Subwoofer has a relatively simple yet attractive design, consisted of a rectangular black box measuring 17 x 14.75 x 17.25 inches. The weight is 42.7 pounds. So it is pretty big and heavy, and you need to consider that when looking for a place for it. Its size demands a bigger room.
The cabinet consists of black laminated MDF, standing on four rubber feet used as a stabilizer and keeping the subwoofer in its place. The thick walls prevent any unwanted resonances and standing wave formations.
The exciting look of the subwoofer comes once the grille is off. The beautiful silver 12-inch bass driver reveals and shows the heart that gives life to this device. It reminds me of a lighter version of Klipsch’s copper woofers.
So you have two options for the subwoofer. To blend in with the interior when the grille is on or to stand out with the grille off.
On the back, there are frequency control, volume control, speakers stereo output terminals, receivers stereo input terminals, RCA connection, power indicator, and a three-position power button.
Below the controls is the port of brass reflex. It is a patented Venturi Port from BIC that additionally minimizes distortion for much cleaner sound.
The RMS is 150 watts and 475 watts peak, allowing the subwoofer to reach levels of 116 dB. So be assured that you will get some serious sound. The tremendous power comes from its BASH-designed internal amplifier. This amplifier has an improvement regarding wasted heat and energy utilization. Combined with the intricate circuitry, the result is very low distortion and a high signal-to-noise ratio. Put in simple words, this means you get better sound quality, and you hear more of the stuff that you need to hear and less of what you should not.
The 12-inch injection-molded long-throw woofer has a very high excursion, which allows it to move more air and produce a more robust and deeper sound.
The impedance is 8 ohms, and the sensitivity is 90dB. The frequency response range is 25 – 200 Hz (+/- 3 dB).
Other features are the automatic signal sensing to turn on whenever the subwoofer feels a signal and magnetic shielding.
The setup is easy as any other subwoofer that needs a receiver. A cable goes from the sub input under the crossover knob on the sub’s back into the receiver’s sub output. In case you have problems, there is support available and customer service.
BIC is sure about the quality of the subwoofer and provides a five-year warranty.
The amount and the quality of the bass are impressive. Bass is abundant, powerful, punchy, and amazingly clean.
Even at high volumes, there is no distortion, and the bass’s quality remains the same. With Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital, you can further customize the sound based on the music you are playing and the subwoofer placement in the room.
When you watch movies, things get even better. It is not about the loudness but the performance when the volume is lower. Many times subwoofers tend to blend bass notes and frequencies at lower volumes.
But with the BIC America F12 subwoofer, that is not the case. No loosing of clarity at lower volumes, and details are still there.
Watching action movies or horrors is a fantastic experience, just like you are at the cinema. It is an impressive subwoofer that does its job the best.
The only downside is the size of the subwoofer and its weight. But to provide such a powerful and deep bass, it has to be.
BIC America F12 subwoofer might not have the highest power wattage, and its size might not be the most compact. Still, these small details don’t minimize the fact that this a fantastic device, customizable and affordable, with powerful bass. F12 is one of the best subwoofers money can buy and will fit perfectly in any home theater providing incredible sound for music and movies.
