Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2 Review

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2 Review

B&O PLAY, the world-renowned manufacturer Bang & Olufsen, produces portable and high-quality Bluetooth speakers. In May 2017, the Danish company had the BeoPlay P2presented in royal blue, sandstone, and black. We took a closer look at the compact and not exactly cheap Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2 in the test.

PROS:

  • Great sound
  • Compact
  • Splashproof

CONS:

  • High price
  • The operation takes some getting used to

Processing and impression of quality

The 275-gram BeoPlay P2 is sold in a relatively inconspicuous, small, high-quality cardboard box. In addition to the speaker, only a USB-C to USB-A cable is included in the scope of delivery.

The BeoPlay P2 makes a valuable impression at first glance and convinces very good quality. The materials used feel very high-quality, and everything looks like it was made of one piece. For example, the speaker is surrounded by rubberized plastic on the back, while a metal grille is on the front.

In addition, the speaker is equipped with a leather strap, and you can use it to hang the small speaker almost anywhere. The BeoPlay can be adjusted using a small sliding element on which the Bang & Olufsen logo is located.

Measuring 14 x 8 x 2.8 centimeters, it is not much larger but higher than an iPhone 6 and is still compact enough for mobile use. Overall, we like the look and feel of the speaker very much!

The Features of Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2

While the case isn’t waterproof, it’s protected from splash water and dust. As a result, the BeoPlay P2 is ideal for outdoor use in combination with the compact size. The loudspeaker can also be a hands-free system, thanks to an integrated microphone. This worked without any problems in our test, and the person we were talking to was always clear and easy to understand.

Apart from the USB-C cable connection, there are no other connection or control elements

Apart from the USB-C port, there are no other ports or functions. This means that the speaker can only be connected to the smartphone or other devices via Bluetooth 4.2. The Bluetooth connection worked without any problems in our test. But unfortunately, two speakers of the same type cannot be paired with one another.

The speaker’s battery is fully charged in 2 to a maximum of 3 hours. The test lasted up to 8 hours at an average volume of 50 to 60 percent.

The handling

There is only one button on the bottom of the speaker. The user uses this to turn the P2 on and off and activate its Bluetooth function. There are no other controls, so the music must be controlled directly via the app. This can be downloaded free of charge from the app stores and installed on iOS or Android smartphones. The mobile application is very easy to use and provides many functions. The sound is set using four squares and a red dot and can be easily adapted to individual tastes. The setting is saved directly to the speaker.

In addition, the mobile application supports various gestures that the user can configure individually. Among other things, you can set what the speaker should do when the user double-taps on the grid. In addition to the music control, there are various alarms and a snooze function in the app. We had a lot of fun with the app in our test, but we liked more basic controls on the case.

The sound quality

Considering the compact dimensions, the Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2 shines in terms of sound. Therefore, the Danish manufacturer has placed less value on various functions but has more importance on high-quality sound.

The highs and mids are brilliant and clear and do not have to hide from the sound characteristics of larger speaker models.

The basses are surprisingly powerful and are very strong with bass-heavy music. We have hardly heard such a full sound from any other speaker with similar dimensions. With Future’s “Mask Off,” the small speaker manages to reproduce almost the entire depth and “breadth” of the bass and thus creates the impression that you are dealing with a much larger speaker.

Due to the extreme bass, the subwoofer may distort slightly on some songs played at half volume. However, the bass is only reduced from around 60 percent of the maximum volume. As a result, the BeoPlay P2 shows its full strength with jazz, classical, and similar genres.

The P2 has no problems demanding classics such as Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and allows the real joy of playing. The fine, detailed highs and mids come into their own here.

The bottom line is that both the sound quality and the volume of the compact Bluetooth speaker are fully convincing. On the other hand, they are roughly the same size, but cheaper competitor products ultimate Ears ROLL 2andJBL Clip 2do not, in our opinion, come close to the sound quality of the P2.

  • Treble: Very Good
  • Middle: Very good
  • Depths: Very Good

Conclusion on the Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay P2

The BeoPlay P2 from the Danish manufacturer B&O PLAY is one of the most expensive models in the mini and compact class. For a good price, buyers get a very high-quality Bluetooth speaker. The design is a little understated compared to other models from the parent company Bang & Olufsen. However, it lies very well in hand and is ideal for on the go thanks to its compact dimensions.

The setup is done in a few moments, and the Bluetooth connection is stable and reliable. However, the speaker can only be operated to a very limited extent without the app, which can only be installed on Android and iOS smartphones. The mobile application, for its part, convinces with a clear design and offers many individual setting options.

The only point of criticism is that you have to operate the speaker more or less with the app – but that works very well. Tapping and shaking to control the P2 also takes some getting used to. There is hardly any similarly sized Bluetooth speaker that can hold a candle to the BeoPlay P2 in processing and sound quality. So, we have a clear buy recommendation!
